Weekly Black & White Square Photo

Cumberland Hose Co. No. 1

The Canada Hose Company Building is the oldest of several Cumberland firehouses built in the 19th century. This building was completed in 1845. You can read more about this building, which is on the National Historic Registry as well as the Maryland Historical Trust, here - All Aboard For Cumberland.

For this photo I used a P&S 5mp camera set at f/5.6 with an ISO of 100. To create this effect I used Photoshop Elements 6. I find that working in my digital darkroom, to achieve the finished image that I had in mind when taking the photo, is almost as much fun as taking the actual photo itself.

If you've read any of my previous post you will have heard me say that there is a lot of history in my world and this is just another fine example of what you can find when you come to Western Maryland for a visit.

Yeah, this is my historical world and you are welcome to it.

  1. This is interesting firehouse in Maryland,in Delaware, firehouses often double as a meeting place and so they are ultra modern looking, often times. So was the black and white look done in photo shop and was this a filmed camera.

  2. Thanks for the comment boldartist. This firehouse is no longer used as one. It is now being used as the Cumberland Neighborhood Housing office.

As I mentioned in my post I took this photo with a 5mp P&S digital camera. In Photoshop Elements I converted it to a black & white image and did some other work on it before publishing it to my photoblog. Hope this answers your questions.

    Again, thanks.
