Three Bridges And A Spillway

Please click on the photo for a better image...

In this view, looking from the Two Path of the C&O Canal at the terminus end at Cumberland, MD, you can see a train bridge and a vehicular and foot traffic bridge, both of which lead from Maryland to West Virginia and back again, and the I68 overpass bridge that runs over Cumberland. Under the vehicular bridge is the spill way over which flows the Potomac River.

In the background you can see the Allegany Co. MD Court House in the upper right side and the spiral of St. Paul's Lutheran which are located in Cumberland, MD. In the middle far background is a natural cut in the mountain range through which runs Wills Creek which merges with the Potomac River on this side of the spillway...

An Old Man On Picnic Rock

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Well, here I am, on this big rock that I call "Picnic Rock". You see, this rock is by a picnic area that is along a portion of Route 40 in Western Maryland. About 60 plus years ago was the last time I was able to be sitting on this rock; I was about eight or nine years old.

While I have gone by this rock numerous times it was only recently that I started getting the urge to stop and climb up on it and sit a spell. So, one day along with my wife I asked her if she would mind taking a few photos of me and she said, "Sure, where at?" So, I pulled off the road and said, "Right here."

Do you know what she said? She said, "Well, it is about time. Let's go." And we did and here I am - an old man sitting on Picnic Rock... :-)

Old Man Sitting On Picnic Rock

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Well, I made it up on Picnic Rock. Actually, it was easier than I had thought it would be. So, now that I made it up I guess that I can say that I have actually done something that I have not done for more than 60 years... Hey, it is an accomplishment for me... :-)

Tomorrow you can see a photo of what the surrounding area is like. Oh, I will still be seated on Picnic Rock but you will get a sense of what it is like to be here, and just imagine what it would be like in the middle of Summer when everything is lush, green and full of growth. It really is an amazing area, even if it is along side a road...

Take care, my Friends, and I will see you once again tomorrow...

Old Man Climbing Picnic Rock

Please click on the photo for a better image...

The last time that I did this, climb up on this rock, was back in the 50's. I was somewhere between six and nine. This time it was a little harder but still just as much fun trying to get up on it, especially when the little nooks where one can put their feet seemed to be a lot smaller. I am sure it was not because of the fact that my feet where a lot larger.

Yes, it was fun and I am glad that I did this, even if my wife was worried about my falling off. She said that she had the camera ready if I did and that she was hoping to get it as it was happening. Well I didn't fall off and she only get this photo. Not exactly my best side... :-)

Tomorrow (Wednesday) I make it and you will see me sitting up where I did 60 plus years ago...

Picnic Rock ... 1

Please click on the photo for a better image...

About 60 plus years ago, when I was around eight or nine back in the 50's, this was a picnic area. Well, at least this was where a couple of picnic tables were located, and they still are.

Along Route 40 in Western Maryland there is a small pull off area where this area is located. It was back in the 50's when I last climbed upon the "Picnic Rock"; until recently. My wife and I stopped and I climbed upon this rock (I'm 2 months shy of being 70) and my wife took a few photos of the fun occasion.

Over the next three days I will post a photo of my climbing up on this rock and then sitting on it like I did back in the 50's. I have a photo somewhere of my doing this back in the 50's and if I can find it I will post it as well to show the difference. In the meantime have some fun looking at the images and my climbing upon and sitting up on this rock. With me on it will show just how big is this rock...

See you tomorrow... :-)

Backyard Autumn

Please click on the photo for a better image...

On your right you will see "The Reason for Riff's Photography Journal" and underneath it you will read this:

The purpose of this journal is to show that you can find something of interest to photograph even if you don't leave your own yard.

I like to practice what I preach and this is an example of that. This is the view that I have from my back porch. Not a bad Autumn afternoon...
