The story of a babe in a manger is a wonderful story, but it is not the whole story. To find out who it is who was born in the manger go to the link below and learn why it is that "We knew Him not".

Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a most wonderful Happy New Year...

Senior Center - A One Time Used To Be

Please click on the photo for a better image...

This one time Senior Center was quite busy in its day. Now this building stands empty. The building was once the city’s post office and a federal courthouse. Later it housed the Cumberland’s jail and police department...

This view is just of the side entrance to the building...

Three Bridges And A Spillway

Please click on the photo for a better image...

In this view, looking from the Two Path of the C&O Canal at the terminus end at Cumberland, MD, you can see a train bridge and a vehicular and foot traffic bridge, both of which lead from Maryland to West Virginia and back again, and the I68 overpass bridge that runs over Cumberland. Under the vehicular bridge is the spill way over which flows the Potomac River.

In the background you can see the Allegany Co. MD Court House in the upper right side and the spiral of St. Paul's Lutheran which are located in Cumberland, MD. In the middle far background is a natural cut in the mountain range through which runs Wills Creek which merges with the Potomac River on this side of the spillway...

An Old Man On Picnic Rock

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Well, here I am, on this big rock that I call "Picnic Rock". You see, this rock is by a picnic area that is along a portion of Route 40 in Western Maryland. About 60 plus years ago was the last time I was able to be sitting on this rock; I was about eight or nine years old.

While I have gone by this rock numerous times it was only recently that I started getting the urge to stop and climb up on it and sit a spell. So, one day along with my wife I asked her if she would mind taking a few photos of me and she said, "Sure, where at?" So, I pulled off the road and said, "Right here."

Do you know what she said? She said, "Well, it is about time. Let's go." And we did and here I am - an old man sitting on Picnic Rock... :-)

Here is a link for the other three posts... Picnic Rock

Old Man Sitting On Picnic Rock

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Well, I made it up on Picnic Rock. Actually, it was easier than I had thought it would be. So, now that I made it up I guess that I can say that I have actually done something that I have not done for more than 60 years... Hey, it is an accomplishment for me... :-)

Tomorrow you can see a photo of what the surrounding area is like. Oh, I will still be seated on Picnic Rock but you will get a sense of what it is like to be here, and just imagine what it would be like in the middle of Summer when everything is lush, green and full of growth. It really is an amazing area, even if it is along side a road...

Take care, my Friends, and I will see you once again tomorrow...

Old Man Climbing Picnic Rock

Please click on the photo for a better image...

The last time that I did this, climb up on this rock, was back in the 50's. I was somewhere between six and nine. This time it was a little harder but still just as much fun trying to get up on it, especially when the little nooks where one can put their feet seemed to be a lot smaller. I am sure it was not because of the fact that my feet where a lot larger.

Yes, it was fun and I am glad that I did this, even if my wife was worried about my falling off. She said that she had the camera ready if I did and that she was hoping to get it as it was happening. Well I didn't fall off and she only get this photo. Not exactly my best side... :-)

Tomorrow (Wednesday) I make it and you will see me sitting up where I did 60 plus years ago...

Picnic Rock ... 1

Please click on the photo for a better image...

About 60 plus years ago, when I was around eight or nine back in the 50's, this was a picnic area. Well, at least this was where a couple of picnic tables were located, and they still are.

Along Route 40 in Western Maryland there is a small pull off area where this area is located. It was back in the 50's when I last climbed upon the "Picnic Rock"; until recently. My wife and I stopped and I climbed upon this rock (I'm 2 months shy of being 70) and my wife took a few photos of the fun occasion.

Over the next three days I will post a photo of my climbing up on this rock and then sitting on it like I did back in the 50's. I have a photo somewhere of my doing this back in the 50's and if I can find it I will post it as well to show the difference. In the meantime have some fun looking at the images and my climbing upon and sitting up on this rock. With me on it will show just how big is this rock...

See you tomorrow... :-)

Backyard Autumn

On your right you will see "The Reason for Riff's Photography Journal" and underneath it you will read this:

The purpose of this journal is to show that you can find something of interest to photograph even if you don't leave your own yard.

I like to practice what I preach and this is an example of that. This is the view that I have from my back porch. Not a bad Autumn afternoon...

The Rebel

Please click on the photo for a better image...

In 1961 TV shows were in black and white. One of those shows that I always enjoyed watching was "The Rebel". It was a half hour show and starred Nick Adams. The show was about a Confederate Army privates escapades after the end of the Civil War. He was a rogue and a drifter usually helping out the good guy fighting against the bad guys. I really liked that show.

About a week ago, on a channel I do not always get, this show came on and I watched it... and I greatly enjoyed watching a b&w TV show. It sure brought back some good memories and for half an hour I was back in my youth again; that does not happen that much and I like to enjoy those moments as much as possible and to make them last... That is why I took this photo...

Post #1047 ..... Honoring The USS Voge DE-1047

This being post #1047 on Riff's Photography Journal I decided to do so by honoring the ship upon which I served back in the 60's... The USS Voge DE-1047

Being part of the commissioning crew, The Voge was finally commissioned in November of 1966 in the Navy Shipyards in Boston and I spent my time in the Radio Room (Shack) for the next two years.

This first photo is what she was like when underway and gives a nice long view of her.

This photo is one that I took of her dockside in the Navy Yards in Boston not long after her commissioning.

The guys below were the nucleus of the crew of the Radio Shack and they are from L to R myself, Jerry, Joe, Larry, Ray and Robert. Robert has since past away and only the five of us are left.

This photo is of the Championship Softball team of the Voge. This was taken in 1967. I am in the back row, second from the left; the tall, skinny guy with the dark hair.

Of course I could not just let it go. This is yours truly at his station in the Shack taking a little break...

I served on board the USS Voge from 1966 to 1968 and they were two of the best years of my life. The crew, from the Captain on down were wonderful with which to serve; made lifetime friends and many times I reminisce about those times and all that we did and encountered. Those days will never be forgotten.

In a few weeks there is celebration being held in honor of the 50'th Anniversary of the commissioning of the Voge. I will not be there. My wife is recovering from being treated for lymphoma and after all of the chemo and radiation treatments she is having a hard time re-gaining her strength, not to mention about re-growing new hair, of which she lost all of it from the chemo treatment, but it is starting to grow back. BTW, she is now cancer free...

So, I will be there in spirit and wishing all my old shipmates a wonderful celebration. Yeah, spending two years aboard the USS Voge DE-1047 really was a once in a lifetime experience and I am very glad to have been there and served aboard her with such a hardworking and fun crew on a magnificent ship...

Sail on Voge sail on.....
