One Last "Happy Holidays"

Please click on the photo for a better image...

As 2015 comes to an end let me wish you one last "Happy Holidays".

My hope is that you have had a wonderful time these past few weeks, whether you have a little or a lot. Me? I have little in material things but I have much in family and a few friends. At times like this it is family, and my faith in God, that gets me through and what few friends that I have make me glad for what I have.

So, as we are starting a New Year I pray that you will have many happy holidays in the coming year and begin to realize that it is not in the material things where you can find happiness but it is in the people that you have in your life. I would rather have a couple of close, loving and honest friends than many people around all of the time because of what I have, and not for who I am.

It is by my family and my faith in God where I find true happiness, and it is my hope, wish and prayer that you may find this kind of happiness and contentment as well.

Having said this I do wish you all a most wonderful end to your "Happy Holidays" and the beginning of a most wonderful and happy New Year... :-)

Color Of Winter At Christmas

Please click on either photos for a better image...

At Christmas, here in Western MD, it is usually in the 20's or 30's with snow but this year the weather has been so nice with warm temperatures that have ranged from the 40's to the 60's.

On Christmas day, even though it was overcast, the weather was warm. There are Fall leaves still hanging on some trees, and on the hillside at the back of the yard there were colors of Reds and Greens for Christmas mixed in with bright colors of Yellow and Orange of Fall still hanging around.

Two days later the temperature hit 70 on the back porch. Ummm, with just five days left until the New Year, I hope that we do get some days down in the 20's with some snow thrown in, not too much, just so I won't have to go out and cut the grass in January. That would be a first if that is something that I have to do...

Please click on the photo for a better image...

My Friends, if you celebrate Christmas then I wish you a very Merry Christmas. If you do not celebrate Christmas then I wish you a joyous Happy Holidays. Either way may this time of the year bring you some joy no matter where you are what is your situation. We all need some peace and love and may the season bring these into your life...

Happy Holidays At The Embassy Theatre

Please click on the photo for a better image...

The Embassy opened in 1931 and for many years operated as a movie theater. Years later it had been turned into retail space. Eventually it was remodeled into a live performance theater and allied arts venue and is still in use to this day...

A Trace But It Is Something

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Yeah, that bit of white stuff is the result of our first snow of the season as of December 19. It is not much but by this time of the year we have already had several inches or a foot or more of snow.

Here is a link to a photo that I posted last year that was dated December 3, 2014 that shows what a typical snow time is like in my neighborhood. You can compare it to the photo above and see why even this little amount starts to get me excited about Winter; which will officially arrive this coming week.

Problem is, starting Monday the temperatures are supposed to rise and by Christmas Eve the temp will be in the upper 60's. Ugh, no White Christmas this year, and that is a bummer...

Buttercup

Not that long ago the yard was full of these little Buttercups. Now none can be found anywhere but, if the weather continues with this warm spell any longer they just might start popping back up... :-)

Dueling Photographers

Please click on the photo for a better image...

I was on the Mall when I noticed these two women walking my way. Suddenly one said, "I think I am going to photograph this." The other one said, "OK, while you are doing that I will photograph this way." At the same time I raised my camera and caught them both looking as if they were photographing each other. Sometimes you can capture life as it is at just the right time.

Did someone just say, "Decisive Moment?"... :-)

Vintage Christmas Decorations

Please click on the photo for a better image...

One large room out front and three smaller rooms in the back, that is what you will find at Baltimore Street Collectibles. Right now, pretty much all of these rooms are full of vintage, some collectible, Christmas decorations. My wife has already purchased a couple of items and prices really were not bad at all.

Baltimore Street Collectibles is an eclectic mix of vintage collectibles and unique home furnishings. Choose from their selection of beautiful glassware, costume jewelry, furniture, books, records...and right now Christmas items galore.

They are located at 43 Baltimore St. Cumberland, MD...

No, I have no connections with this business, only as a customer, but I think this place offers quite a lot of vintage and collectible items all year round at prices you will appreciate. If you are ever in Cumberland stop by and look around. Even if you just visit you will enjoy it...

Days Of Time Gone By

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Got the idea for photographing this train, Mountain Thunder of the Western MD Scenic Railroad, from another photographer who is also an Internet Friend. Took a walk down the Rail Trail to a point where the atmosphere looked more like it was in the past and waited for Mountain Thunder to come around the bend.

Took a number of photos, several of which I will post on here, and will only post those that are of wonderful interest, at least to me, and I hope that you will enjoy them as well... :-)

A Back Hallway Stairwell ..... A Black & White Photo on Black Friday

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Last Friday I posted a photo of a school's back hallway.

Opens in a new window

On another site of a local nature the photo response was over 200. During that time more than once was there mentioned about a stairwell that led to the 2nd floor. It was amazing how many people mentioned this stairwell so I thought that it would be a good idea to post a photo of it. I am quite curious as to what, if any, responses I will get for this photo. We'll see..... :-)

Every Day Wonder..... Into The Woods

Please click on the photo for a better image

If you go down to the woods today you're sure of a big surprise... So starts the song, "Teddy Bear's Picnic".

In this neighborhood you go down to the end of the lane and, at the last house, you can enter into the woods. The trees here are always among those whose leaves last the longest and this year was no exception...

Every Day Wonders..... Off Of Route 51

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Was heading out of town on Rt. 51, and by now most of the trees are void of leaves, when suddenly I noticed this little plot of woodland with these colors still showing. I pulled off and parked across the road from this sight and took several photos of these trees.

This image is the one that I liked best. It shows the colors of Rust, Wheat and Green. I loved the combination and just seeing this in the midst of leafless tress was quite amazing. Why these trees when all else were bare? Sometimes nature throws us a curve and only when one is looking can you see the wonderful scene that presents to us an "Every Day Wonder"...

A School's Back Hallway

Please click on the photo for a better image...

When empty a school's back hallway can look lonely and cold. It does, however, make one wonder who's feet have been here. How many hands have been held. The flirt, the hug or a quick kiss. Who knows what all has occurred in this hallway over the years? The only one who does know is the back hallway itself, and it isn't saying anything, but it does know all... :-)

Come to an intersection and you can see what you need to do. Love the way the tree looks in the background and I start to take a photo of this scene just as this truck comes roaring throw going the other way..... On another road... :-)

Every Day Wonders..... Front Yard Potomac Park

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Today I am starting a new series of photos called "Every Day Wonders". These are photos from every day life of something that I perceive to be wonderful, amazing or beautiful. For me these are scenes that many will take for granted and just past by without even a second glance.

I believe that there are photographic opportunities everywhere and that it only takes a little time of your day to day activities to look for them and to see them. For the next several weeks I will be posting photos from my little piece of the world where I live; that are taken within 10 miles of my home of scenes, activities and people that I find interesting enough to document for viewing.

Today's image was taken in my neighborhood close to my own home. This photo was taken about a week ago and today the red flowers are almost all gone. This image was taken on a cloudy, rainy and a slightly windy day with my Fuji X20. In fact all of the images, for the most part, will be taken by this little camera.

I hope you enjoy seeing these photos and I look forward to any and all comments that you may decide to give. So come along for the ride and let me know what you think... :-)

A Tribute To Two Grandsons

Last Friday night an era ended for Mary and I. Two Grandson's, seniors at two different schools and each playing different sports, played in their final games; one soccer and the other football. Because of scheduling, we were only able to see each play in the second half of their respective games. In one Grandson I can see so much of his Dad and the other Grandson displays so much of his Mom. While bigger and better things could be awaiting both of them, we will miss these moments of watching their speed, the grace in which they played and the toughness that came through with their actions.

They are both true athletes in every sense of the word, intelligent in their class work and loving members of our family. Times like these are fleeting. We saw it with our own kids and we are now seeing it with our Grandson's; our eldest Grandson has already moved on from high school and sports and we have one who just came into high school and one who is in pre-school.

Times like these come around only once, my friends, so enjoy them while you can because once they are passed you only have the memories and, in my case, hundreds - maybe several thousand overall - of photos on which to fall back on. That is the reason for which I first took up photography, beginning with my own kids, and it was worth it.

Good luck and God bless to our Grandson’s River and Ethan. We sure do love you both...

For River (in Red with Green Shoes), except for scoring an occasional goal, there is great satisfaction in taking the ball away from the opposition and heading back up field. He has great leaping ability for headball passing and, with his speed and great footwork, he can get pass defenders to pass the ball on to a striker for a score. Something which he has done all season...

Ethan (#67 in Blue) plays both offense and defense, and when he is not blocking and making running lanes while on offense, he loves playing defense and even when being pushed from behind he can still reach out and grab a scrambling Quarterback, or running back, and take them down. He has had his name called numerous times all season for making tackles...

To E and Riv... we love you both with a never ending and unconditional love, and will sorely miss watching you play the games that you love... :-)

Autumn Has Arrived In My Neighborhood

Please click on the photo for a better image...

I am not much of a fan of doing landscape photography in bright sunlight. What I like more is to use overcast or stormy skies for capturing the Fall colors. This is an example of that.

As seen from my backyard, this was taken late evening last week, just as storm clouds were coming over. The soft glow of the late evening light just seemed to make the colors pop even more and, with only a few leaves just starting to change, the colors showed up even better against the dark green leaves of the plants.

So, Autumn is finally starting to come out and it will be interesting to see how the colors come around this year. It will be fun watching them and I sure hope we get a lot more overcast or stormy skies under which to photograph the changes...

Homecoming Lane
Please click on a photo for a better image...

Weather permitting, tonight is the Homecoming Game for my Grandson Ethan's Falcon Football Team. His sign is at the beginning of Homecoming Lane. Ethan plays both Offensive and Defensive line in his senior year of football.

No matter what the weather, if the game is still on, you can be sure that my wife and I, along with Ethan's whole family, will be there to route him on and for the Falcons to win. Good luck Ethan, may God bless your playing on both sides of the ball, and enjoy this once in a lifetime event... :-)

Friday Favorite..... Looking Back At Cumberland

Please click on the photo for a better image...

On the C&O Canal Tow Path, down the Potomac River, looking back at Cumberland, MD. Taken, of course, during Autumn of a past year. The Blue Bridge, that really is its name, crosses over the Potomac from Cumberland to Ridgeley, WV.

The big building up on the hill is the Allegany County Court House sitting in an area where once stood Fort Cumberland when it was the last outpost to the West.

Elevating For Headball Action

Please click on the photo for a better image...

As Number 7 went up for some headball action the defender, No. 11, had a hold of his shirt in trying to hold him down. Even the defender is slightly off of the ground almost as if the Offensive player had pulled him up as he went up. And No. 11 looks as if he had an arm hammer hold on the defender during all of this.

However, if you look at the referee in the background, he is not even watching the action as he is looking at something going on over on the sideline and we do not even know what it is. Action is going on every where in this photo. I love images like this...

Blocking For Your Running Back

Please click on the photo for a better image...

When you are an Offensive Lineman and your Running Back is coming your way, you will block for him in what ever way that you can to get him past the line of scrimmage. Number 67, in the middle, is doing just that. He kept is man away from the Running Back and allowed him to make a nice gain on this play.

He did his job and he did it well...

The Dentist's Office

Please click on the photo for a better image...

Most medical buildings have a sterile, block like look to them. They look cold and not very inviting. However, this Dentist's office is in a converted two story walk-up. It looks homey and inviting which helps to set people at ease as they proceed to enter. Actually looks pretty darn good, if you ask me...
