Black & White Photography

Going Below

If you have followed this journal long enough you will know that my motto is, “If you are not looking you will never see.” Well, that still holds true no matter where you are; even when walking through your neighborhood.

This is an example of what I’m saying. As I was making my way around the hood, during my morning walk, I noticed these steps in a backyard. They actually go from an upper yard to a lower one, so that anyone needing to traverse this area had easy help in “going below”.

I should mention that this was at a house that is for sale and no one is living there. If you are going to do any photography around your neighborhood, make sure people either know you or know what you are doing and why. Otherwise, you might have someone call the police about you. Just don't be obnoxious and do not go slinking around looking like you might be a "peeping" Tom. Be open about yourself, talk to everyone you encounter and do not photograph kids without parents permission.

Just be yourself, be open, be honest and be a good neighborhood, and you and your camera will always be welcomed. Also, it does not hurt to give out some of the photos that you take.

However, remember that as long as you are on public ground you have legal rights to photograph anything you can see. Having to explain to the law enforcement what you are doing or getting punched first and questions asked second is something else. So far, I've never encountered either... :-)

I do love my neighborhood, there is so much going on. You only have to be looking in order to see, and let others see what a good neighbor you are…
