Weekly Black & White Square Photo

Approaching The Tunnel

This is the PawPaw Tunnel. It is 3118 feet (950m) long and is part of the C&O Canal. Construction for the tunnel began in 1836 and it was finished in 1850. The tunnel is on the Maryland side of the Potomac River and the small town of PawPaw, WV is just across the river.

This photo was originally taken using a little Panasonic 3.2mp camera. In Photoshop Elements it was converted to a B&W image and cropped for the square look. I added some vignetting, burned in some areas and added a touch of sharpening. In addition, I gave it a little aging effect.

I've been here several times and it is a tunnel used by many people, including all those who walk or ride the TowPath of the C&O Canal between Washington, DC and Cumberland MD. When you come to Western Maryland make sure you take the time to visit the Tunnel and walk through it. It is a one time thing to do for the visitors who come by and you may never get another chance to do so.

Yeah, this is my world and you are welcome to it.
